How do you configure a LAN connection for a home computer to connect to the internet?

lan
Mookie asked:

I am installing dsl on my computer. I went through the troubleshooting with the tech. When I open up my internet connection window. There is no icon for LAN or High speed connection. There is just a local area connection.
I ran the cd and everything was fine as far as installing the modem. After the installation process, the system checks everything before setting up the account and that is when the problem comes in. Any ideas on what to try?
