How do I setup a LAN between 3 computers?

One of my computers has an Internet connection.I want to share it with the other 2 computers too.What hardware and software will be involved?I dont want to spend too much.I want to setup this LAN using Cat 5 ethernet cable as I have lots of it.Also will the internet connection speed slow down?If it does then what is the alternative so that I can have the same speed on all 3 at the sametime.Will I also be a ble to download stuf on all 3 computers at the same time?Pls help me!

   you need a router and a lan card for each computer
   hookup the internet connection (modem) to the router and connect each computer to the router as well.

   I would use a hub or switch to network the computers together. Then, set up a proxy server on the computer with the Internet connection and set up the other computers to connect through the proxy server.

   If you have a router to connect with internet you can normally use it as a switch for the other PC’s (if the router is ready for this), if not you need a switch (3com office connect) of some sort to connect each of the PC’s and the router together.

   Give all the PC’s the same IP range and subnet mask, the router will normally be your default gateway.

   Windows XP has a good Wizard for preparing home networks.

   As for the speed, you will probably notice a drop in speed, you’re used to having only 1 PC use all the bandwidth, if the other 3 are using the same link then the bandwidth is “split”. Depending on what you use your internet for, and how much bandwidth you have, you may or may not notice any difference.

   I’ve included some good resources below.

   My recommendation is:
   1) Buy a good router. Linksys or Netgear (Ex. NETGEAR RP614 10/100Mbps Cable/DSL Web Safe Router – Retail) or (LINKSYS BEFSR41 10/100Mbps Router – Retail)
   2) Connect them using your Cat5 to the router.
   3) Enjoy

   Go step by step —-

   1. u got to have 2 network cards on the computer u have internet on…and one each on the other computers….and a switch or a hub.

   2. connect the internet broadband cable in one of the two network cards and configure its IP addresses as told by the Internet service provider…

   3. put one end of the cross cable in the hub and the other end in the other network card….

   4. similarly put one end of the cross cable in the hub and other in the network card of the other two computers…

   5. now configure ip addresses and subnet masks of each computer by giving ip addresses of the same range….for example – - 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11 and 192.168.0.12….

   6. now ryt click on my computer , and give a uniform workgroup like mshome….

   This should start the internet as well as file sharing in all computers….

   if u use a hub the speed of internet will be more on the computer with internet connection directly…and slower in the other two computers….but if u use a switch it will ensure almost equal speed in all the computers

   u can use a switch …which would be cheaper…but a router would be more useful.
