   I assume you are talking about net send? I dont know about Ubuntu much, but if the meesenger service is turned off on the workstations the net send command will not work.

   If by messages you mean pop-up windows, then you should be able to do this either via the command line tool smbclient (probably already installed, use the -M option), or graphically via qtsmbstatus (install via the Ubuntu package manager).
