How fast does your internet connection need to be to use VOIP with min problems?

Is it fast enough so as to use VoIP and do not operate in a heap of trouble. I know I should be concerned with both speed up and down. I have heard some say that VoIP works very well while others say that the service drops calls or have poor quality. I think using VoIP to add an extra phone line for my small business, so you can call and in the United States. I can trust the service or should I go with a traditional landline? Also, does anyone know a good placn fixed long distance?
