Setting Up A Secure Home Wireless Network

Setting Up A Secure Home Wireless Network – 2 Simple Steps To Protect Your Privacy

Securing a home wireless network is a two step process. The first step is to ensure network security by securing the wireless access point or router. All of this can normally be done through the web based software interface of the device, by typing in the default address of ‘192.168.0.1′.

The first thing that needs to be changed is administrator username and password. Many networks are hacked into, simply because nobody bothered changing the default values. This is the same as most VCRs still blinking 12%3A00 because no one changed the time. Once this is done, enable MAC address filtering, and add computers based on their MAC address. This option will allow only those specified computers to connect to the network, but will not however guarantee total security.

The network SSID defines a name for the network. The default value of this should be changed to an obscure and long string. This value should be written down in a safe place and entered into the machines that are allowed to connect. Disabling the broadcast of the network SSID also provides an extra layer of security as the network will not advertise itself to outsiders.
Encryption should also be enabled. The default encryption is normally weak and can be easily broken.

Normally WEP Wireless Equivalent Privacy is used for data encryption, however where available try and use WPA-PSK encryption. This method uses 256 bit encryption for transmitting data and the key also changes so provides a far more secure alternative to WEP.

Some routers have firewalls built in. Where available make sure that this option is enabled.

The second step of securing a home wireless network is securing each individual’s PC. This can be done by installing a software firewall this may not always be necessary if a hardware firewall is installed, antivirus software, anti-spam and pop-up blocking software. It is essential to keep this software up to date, as downloading the latest security updates for the operating system and web browser you are using.

You can manage your home network yourself if you have the time, or you can buy a home networking software that will monitor your network and alert you to any intruders or weak security measures for about $30. Whichever way you choose to do it make sure you secure your home wireless network.

Home Networking One 0n 0ne Part 3

Electronic imaging consumes large amounts of bandwidth and data. Current connections at home are primarily of modems converge to 33. 6 kbps or 56 kbps. For users who are using still images and video, these speeds are not acceptable. The house is bigger pipes to grow, to all types of Imaging Services, or if someone tries to sell various types of imaging devices you want to use the Internet infrastructure.
The home user has a contract with an ISP for a fixed monthly price. The ISP usually offers a dial that the consumer with s standard modem. The cost of a dial is usually less than $ 20 per month. Many new technologies have been developed with the consumer in mind, to the bandwidth that increases a computer available at home.
Overcome the first hurdle you have to get better acquainted with the initials and names. In the terminology is used, the rest is just common sense and be able to carefully follow instructions. One of the first words that you make is the protocol that word. " The technical definition of the word and abbreviations can be very complex. For your purposes, it is fairly simple.
A protocol is a set of rules that were adopted as a way for devices to communicate. For example, the HTTP protocol used by Internet browsers, a detailed list of methods back to the transmission of Internet data. TCP / IP or Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol is a method that determines how packets are to be preserved and transported in a TCP / IP.
Note that there are a variety of ways, with the participation of other protocols, the establishment of networks and their rules. In recent days, IBM was a pioneer in his philosophy SNA network. This has been widely used in industry for decades. Although it has since been replaced by TCP / IP, it is still in use worldwide. These are not the only ones who have been accepted at one time or another. Although the details of interest to computer enthusiasts and professionals, there are aspects, such as a manufacturer of home networking should go untouched. If you happen to know some of them, you can choose your device and make your network intelligently.
For example, if one of the central parts of the home networking gear is the router. However, a router comes in a variety of styles and each is associated with a certain protocol are. Wireless router, you can at the 802nd 11b or 802 11g protocol. It is important to know the technical definition, but you know that evaluates the impact of the former at 11 Mb 54Mb bandwidth of your network.
While the former is set to 11 MB, assessed the rate at which under ideal conditions. The actual flow is about 6-7 MB. Also, remember that 8 bits per byte. This corresponds to a character data. Thus, the real interest rate is only about 1:8, what you actually tend to think if you transfer files. Transmission after the 802nd 11 standard with 100 MB will be timed to be available soon.
However, most people have no reason to care about the details of the Ethernet protocol. The standard protocol used in Ethernet networks is 802nd 3. This allows some of the strangeness of a number of other cryptic eliminated. It is also useful to know that as a synonym for 10BaseT wired Ethernet networks, which operate at 10 megabits per second. 100BaseT is the standard for Ethernet networks that are operating at 100 Mbps.
Every week there is a new acronym, and created a new set of well-known figures. Network designers are among the geekiest of the industry! However, if you can find a few of these protocols and related articles, you'll be quick to bark with the best of them.

How to Build a Simple Home Network System

Many people have relatively simple needs for their home networks. Even now that multiple computers in a single home are common, the systems are often not networked, file transfer is done via "sneaker net", or copying files to and from a CD or sending files via e-mail .
This is an ideal time to build your own home network, if you have always wanted. The cost and complexity of these systems are lower than ever before. Getting there is only the biggest obstacle is the technical term used for many new home builders network. The equipment you need is pretty simple. They are Cat-5 (or Ethernet) cable required to run a cable network. Think about if you plan to configure your computer, how much cable you need and then add about 1 cable 5-more than that – it always takes longer than you think to be determined. If you want to build a wireless network, you can switch the cables.
You also need a switch or a router for all these cables (or radio waves, if connect a wireless network). A hub or switch is just a box with ports for connecting cables – a switch has a little more functionality than not a hub. A router is better and can manage the ICS, and it is almost a must for a home network. I would say almost, because you can use a computer on your network, manage the ICS. However, it is in most cases much easier to use a router instead of a large portion of the resources of a computer fitting to the ICS.
You also need to network interface cards (NICs) in each computer, printer or other device that you want to be on the network. It may be your standard 10/100 Ethernet card or 802 11b / g cards can be used for a wireless network. If you build a wired network, you can use the Ethernet device with 10MB or 100MB speeds. They are so cheap that it will really no reason not to 100MB equipment. These devices are cheap in general, a device that is in the older standard. There's also Gigabit Ethernet, but the costs are unaffordable for many building a home network.
Install, connect, and / or installation of all equipment according to guidelines of the manufacturer. Each device on the network must have at least one IP address. IP addresses are numbers that you may have seen on the Internet, such as: 70-1-2-125. On a home network, see your IP address as 192nd 168. 0. 1 or 10 121. 0. 1.
To begin your IP address numbering with the router. This unit is the center of your network to imagine a star with rays emanating from it. Each cable or wireless signal is one of the beams. The ends of these rays are, where your equipment. If the router has the number 192nd 168. 0. 1, then computers and other devices must be numbered 192nd 168. 0. 2, 192 168. 0. 3. Assign the same address to two devices.
You need in your router manual for details, read how these addresses to forgive, as well as documentation of the operating system of your computer.

Home Networking One 0n 0ne Part 1

There are not too many years, nobody has ever thought of having more than one computer at home. Now that we are so dependent on them, it is a common cause for the home, in order to have multiple computers. Before the blink of an eye, there are seven computers in the house, but there is only one printer and an Internet connection. How is everyone be kept happy and productive?
The answer is to establish a network! This is nothing but a bunch of computer components with a router, hub, and turn it gives its users the opportunity to have the resources together. These resources are some of the most authentic of the use of computers. A network is like a spider web. This is the main reason why the Internet is often called the World Wide Web. Signals are constantly moving across the network. Unlike a spider, a computer network sends and receives these disorders as "packages". Although there are other ways to fulfill the same function, the work almost all of today's networks as described below.
On the network, software and hardware together to transfer these packages. These packets contain information blocks, the data are packed in tax information. The control data allows the computers and routers to know where and how to send your data. In most commercial networks, and host, the method is IP or Internet Protocol. Each device in the network is assigned an address such as 206th 121. 34. 148. If you are using a computer at home, these addresses typically in the range: 10 0. 0. 0-10. 255. 255. 255 or 172nd 16. 0. 0-172. 31. 255. 255 or 192nd 168. 0. 0-192. 168. 255. 255
These are the so-called private addresses, because they are not sent over public networks without change, be the Internet. They are used by computers, routers and devices on your home network. These address ranges are also the same used by private commercial networks. A NAT or Network Address Translation, and coupled with the use of a border router, many businesses and homes to the same range without unintentionally use information to and from others in the Internet.
It may happen that your computer an address very different from how you have 70th 31. 192. 243. This is often the case, since a single computer that is connected to the Internet is given an address that is assigned by the ISP or Internet Service Provider. You do not really want a home network, but you are a paying customer, a commercial network. On each device is a computer, router and printer, a separate address assigned to the software and the hardware can not determine where the data is coming from and where it should go. This is called the communication without confusion.
The routing software and hardware that routes data to and from the corresponding devices using those addresses. The method is almost exactly the same as the post if it routes letters from a home or business to another.
