What is the difference between a wireless modem & wireless router?

wireless
Annie H asked:

We’re getting ready to switch to cable internet which will be hooked up through our desktop. FYI: it does not have wireless connectivity.

I’d like the ability to use the internet on my laptop (which is ready for wireless connections), but I’m not sure what all we’ll need to purchase. I don’t want to buy any more than we need!
Quick Additional Info/Question:
the cable internet subscription will come with a cable modem. Does it need to be wireless in order to work with everything?

Also, will we need a wireless router to get it to work with everything?
OKAY…so what devices will I need?

Understanding Basic Terms in Indoor Fiber Optic Cable Installation

Fiber optic cables are exposed to electrical, mechanical, chemical and environmental elements, so proper installation is critical for the long-term stability and survival of fiber cables.

Cable installation must also meet the NEC(National Electric Code) and local building codes. NEC indicates that fiber optic cables can be placed in the same raceway, cable tray or enclosure with CATV, telephone, communication circuits and Class 2 and 3 remote control signaling circuits.

Laptop Security

Laptop security precautions make users nuts. It all comes down this plaintive cry: “Why can’t I connect?” Or perhaps the better question is, why isn’t it easier to connect? Between passwords, screen locks, complicated procedures to log onto virtual private networks and the risk of getting booted off an “insecure” Wi-Fi connection, well, it’s not always easy for users to get online just anywhere.

And that’s as it should be, says Greg Fay, chief information security officer for the State of Iowa, who admits he gets lots of practice trying to justify this stance. Although Iowa is not guarding trade secrets, “there is always something we’re doing that we wouldn’t like the media to know about until it’s ready to go.”

How can I switch to a different Wireless network when using a wireless ethernet adapter/bridge?

wireless
It’s Me CartoonHead asked:

I keep getting connected to a wireless network across the street. I am running Windows 98 on this desk top so there is no little wireless icon in the system tray like on XP. The wireless adapter is connected through a ethernet card that was an add on for my desk top. I’m not sure how I can switch wireless networks. The wireless adapter does not come with any software. It’s just a plug in thing. Any ideas appreciated.
